Overlay Setup Instructions

Step-by-step installation and usage guide for the NoLock Floating Overlay (macOS & Windows). Select your operating system below and follow each step in order.

NoLock for Mac (Floating Overlay + Chat)

Follow Step 1 first to turn off SIP & AMFI, then run the 1-line Terminal installer in Step 2.

Using Respondus LockDown Browser 2.1.6.01 (Latest) on Mac? Read this first!

This floating overlay app (NoLock for Mac) is currently under maintenance for Respondus 2.1.6.01 (it works on Respondus 2.1.6.00 and on all other proctors like Honorlock, Proctorio, ProctorU, and Examplify).

If your Mac has Respondus 2.1.6.01, do not follow this guide and do not turn off SIP/AMFI — use NoLock Precision Autosolver instead (it works on Respondus 2.1.6.01 right now and keeps SIP & AMFI turned ON).

Turn off SIP, then AMFI (Required BEFORE Step 2)

Do not skip this step! If you run the installer in Step 2 before turning off SIP and AMFI, the installer will stop with an error. It takes two quick reboots:

Phase 1 · Boot into Recovery Mode & disable SIP:

  • Apple Silicon Macs (M1 / M2 / M3 / M4): Shut down your Mac completely. Then press and hold down the Power / Touch ID button until you see Loading startup options → click Options → Continue.
  • Intel Macs: Restart your Mac and immediately hold down ⌘R until the Apple logo appears.
  • Once in Recovery Mode, click Utilities in the very top menu bar → click Terminal, type these two lines one by one, and press Return after each:
csrutil disable
reboot

Phase 2 · Back in normal macOS, disable AMFI:

After your Mac restarts into normal macOS, press ⌘ + Space, open the normal Terminal app, and run these two commands (type your Mac login password when asked — Terminal won’t show letters while you type, just type it and press Return):

sudo nvram boot-args="amfi_get_out_of_my_way=1"
sudo reboot

Important: You must complete Phase 1 (and reboot) before running Phase 2, otherwise macOS blocks the nvram command with not permitted.

Run the 1-line installer in Terminal

Once your Mac has rebooted from Step 1, open Terminal (⌘ + Space → type Terminal), click Copy below, paste it into Terminal, and press Return:

curl -fsSL https://getnolock.com/install/mac | sh

It checks that SIP & AMFI are off, downloads NoLock.app into /Applications, and opens it automatically.

Sign in with Google

Click Sign in with Google and sign in with the exact Google account you used to purchase your NoLock subscription.

Pick your exam app & click Arm

Select LockDown Browser (for Respondus 2.1.6.00) or your exam proctor, then click Arm. A floating overlay bar appears on your screen. Your exam keeps keyboard/mouse focus, clicking the overlay never steals focus, and the overlay is invisible to screen recording and screen sharing.

Using the floating overlay & keyboard shortcuts

Use the overlay during your exam to open Chat, take instant screen captures with ⌘S, or hide/move the bar at any time:

Using the built-in Auto Solver

Toggle Auto Solver ON inside the overlay pane, then press and hold the left mouse button on a question for 3 seconds. NoLock captures the screen, sends it to the AI model, and either selects the answer (Click mode) or shows the answer inside the overlay (Show only mode).
